Approximately 150 social, labor, and political organizations in Catalonia have requested the suspension of the Euroleague basketball game between FC Barcelona and Maccabi Tel Aviv, scheduled for January 6 at the Palau Blaugrana as part of Round 20.
The request is made through a manifesto promoted by the platform “Prou Complicitat amb Israel” (Enough Complicity with Israel), which argues that allowing the game to take place legitimizes violence against the Palestinian people and uses sport as a tool to conceal human rights violations.
According to the platform, there is a broad social and political consensus in Catalonia to prevent the game from being played, despite FC Barcelona’s announcement that it will be played behind closed doors.
Among the organizations that have signed the manifesto are social groups and unions. Local political parties such as ERC, the Comuns, and the CUP have also supported the initiative, and this week they submitted a proposed resolution to the Catalan Parliament explicitly requesting the suspension of the match.
The signatory organizations believe that authorizing the match amounts to “normalizing the genocide against the Palestinian people and contributing to covering up violations of international law and human rights.” The manifesto emphasizes that sport cannot remain neutral in situations of this kind nor serve as “whitewash” for armed conflicts involving the states at issue.
The match between Barça and Maccabi Tel Aviv, scheduled for Three Kings‘ Day at the Palau Blaugrana, has been classified as a high-risk game and will be played behind closed doors. This decision was made by the club to ensure the safety and smooth running of the match.
FC Barcelona has also announced compensation measures for Palau season ticket holders, who will receive a pro-rata refund for the game, as well as a full refund for tickets already purchased.
With the date approaching, Barça’s main supporters’ groups have issued a joint statement expressing their opposition to the game being played under these conditions. Penya Blaugrana Meritxell, Sang Culé, and Dracs have also requested that the EuroLeague exclude Israeli teams from its competitions and have expressed their solidarity with the Palestinian people, calling for an end to the war and violence.
