A complicated situation persists at AS Monaco, leaving the long-term future of the EuroLeague club increasingly uncertain

The Monegasque state has intervened to provide a critical one-month reprieve for AS Monaco, narrowly avoiding an immediate declaration of bankruptcy during a court hearing on Friday, according to several French outlets.

The principality’s Societe Nationale de Financement (SNF) settled €2.5 million in urgent debts, including salaries and social security contributions, as reported by BeBasket. This emergency funding ensured that players and staff, who had faced months of payment arrears, received their full salaries through the end of February, added RMC Sport. By purchasing a single share in the club, the state has effectively forced a pause in the legal proceedings, though the long-term future of the Roca Team remains precarious and obscured by significant financial deficits.

While the intervention prevented an immediate collapse, the Monaco court has appointed a receiver to conduct a thorough assessment of the club’s accounts. A definitive ruling on whether the club will be declared insolvent is now scheduled for April 3. During this interim period, Alexey Fedorychev and Oleksiy Yefimov remain in their roles but must operate under the strict supervision of the court-appointed representative.

The lack of an immediate long-term buyer suggests that the government’s current strategy is focused on survival rather than permanent stability. The goal appears to be ensuring the team completes its 2025-26 domestic and continental campaigns rather than launching a new project immediately.

This turmoil comes at a pivotal moment on the court for the team coached by Vassilis Spanoulis. The squad has already been navigating various sanctions, including transfer bans, stemming from these financial difficulties. Currently, Monaco sits tenth in the EuroLeague Regular Season with a 16-14 record, clinging to the final Play-In spot, while continuing to dominate France’s Betclic Elite Regular Season with a commanding 17-2 record.
