A radical change in what was supposed to be one of the biggest moves of the summer: unless there’s a final twist, the American guard won’t sign for Barça

Mike James’ future has taken an unexpected turn. Just when everything pointed to the American point guard joining Barça for the upcoming season, negotiations between the two parties have broken down and the deal has been definitively ruled out.

This was announced by Basketnews and confirmed a few minutes later by Catalan radio station RAC1, who reported that the Catalan club and the player will not continue talks. This decision has surprised the European basketball world, where it was practically a given that James would wear the Barcelona jersey.

This outcome puts one of the most sought-after names in the EuroLeague back on the market. At 35, James remains one of the most impactful players on the continent and is now considering new offers with a very clear priority: joining a team with a realistic chance of winning the EuroLeague.

The breakdown with Barcelona reduces the options for both parties. While the Catalan club will have to look for alternatives to strengthen its perimeter, James becomes one of the most attractive free agents of the summer, with several title contenders closely monitoring his situation.

The veteran point guard recently ended his time with AS Monaco, bringing to a close a historic era in which he established himself as the EuroLeague’s all-time leading scorer, won the MVP award, and spearheaded the team’s rise to the elite of European basketball. In the 2025-26 season, James played 39 EuroLeague games, averaging 16.4 points, 6.5 assists, and a 19.1 efficiency rating per game, confirming his continued status as one of the competition’s most influential players.
