Miguel Angel Lopez Andrades, a member of Real Madrid‘s staff, was seen and heard calling Barcelona the “biggest band of rats in the EuroLeague” before the “El Classico” tip-off on Thursday evening, while he, later on, apologized for his action.

Following these events, the ELPA released a statement, condemning ‘the intolerable behavior” while also calling for accountability in the disciplinary proceeding. The statement reads:

“It was to our big displeasure to see the intolerable behavior by a staff member of Real Madrid, prior to last night’s game between Real Madrid and Barcelona. While we understand the high pressure situations that big games as “El Classico” can bring,  such behavior which promotes hatred towards opposing team’s players and staff does not by any means fit in any basketball setting. At ELPA we expect that during the disciplinary proceeding, all involved will take into account how such behavior by a staff member of any EuroLeague club can affect players and will continue to work towards eliminating such conduct from future events.”
