Venezuela celebrated one of the biggest upsets in the history of Fiba Americas Chapmionships by beating Argentina in the final (76-71) in Mexico City.

The absolute underdog prevailed over Argentina and got also the ticket for the Olympics like their opponents in the final. In 1992 Venezuela reached also the final but lost easily by USA.

Luis Scola was named the MVP of the tournament (averaging 21,1 points and 10,1 rebounds per game) and included in the All-Star Five with Heissler Guillent (Venezuela), Andrew Wiggins (Canada), Andres Nocioni (Argentina) and Gustavo Ayon (Mexico).
