“Thank you, coach Pop for being more than just a coach, for being like a father for me”, Duncan said during his retirement speech on Sunday night.
The player’s relationship with San Antonio Spurs‘ coach Gregg Popovich runs deep and the former could not help but be very moved in the ceremony. However, he used his signature wit and humor while talking about Duncan.
“He understood everything I was saying, probably agreed with about half of it, but he’s so respectful that he wouldn’t say anything until later. He wouldn’t do it in front of the team. And sometimes I’d be merciless. And for that I’m really thankful, because you allowed me to coach the team.”
