The opening week of the Basketball Champions League’s Round of 16 didn’t disappoint and Cluj Napoca’s win deserved a special mention

The Basketball Champions League Round of 16 has tipped off with five games and with a small group format making every win extremely important, the opening can tell much about the future of the four groups.

The action started with an all-Turkish duel between Tofas and Darussafaka as the former repeated a winning outcome, similar to the one a couple of days earlier in the domestic league. The other matchup from Group J, between BAXI Manresa and Nutribullet Treviso, was postponed.

The same fate awaited the Galatasaray Nef vs Hapoel U-NET Holon game in Group I. Meanwhile, MHP Riesen Ludwigsburg delivered a dominant display against JDA Dijon, led by Justin Simon who logged a big double-double.

Group L was the only lineup with a complete schedule as Lenovo Tenerife got a road win against Falco Szombathely, riding the momentum of the Play-in series. Strasbourg also got a road win, over Rytas, in a close finish with John Roberson banking in the crucial basket.

Last but certainly not least, Group K featured a clash of newcomers. U-BT Cluj Napoca made an upset on the road by beating Unicaja and that way made a strong statement about their ceiling, which is now certainly the potential to fight for the trophy.

Filou Oostende had a week off as the fourth member of the group is yet to be decided. Prometey survived the overtime thriller versus Hapoel Bank Yahav Jerusalem and tied the Play-In series at 1-1.
