The Arena Savaria effect comes back into play for Falco Vulcano Szombathely

The support of the home crowd pushed Falco Vulcano Szombathely. A convincing win, 104-94, over visiting UCAM Murcia Wednesday.

Leading in double-digits most of the way was far from expected. Long-time star of the reigning Hungary champions, Zoltan Perl fired in a game-high 29 points, including 14 in the fourth quarter to seal the deal in the second week of the Basketball Champions League Regular Season.

Controlling the tempo and also executing, Serbian point guard Stefan Pot went for 14 points, eight assists, and five rebounds. From there it was Zach Brown with 18 points, Akos Keller with 16 points, and Boris Barac with 14 points putting in most of the points.

Not the best possible start to the 2022-23 season for Szombathely. Besides coming in at 0-1 in Group A, the team coached by Milos Konakov recently fell to 1-1 in Hungary’s NB I/A. It looks much better now with a 1-1 record spilling out of the convincing display in Gameday 2 of the BCL Regular Season.

On the wrong end of Szombathely earning the 12th win in 17 home games in the Champions League, Murcia missed both injured James Anderson and recent addition Niels Giffey at Arena Savaria. Travis Trice scored a team-high 17 points in the losing effort.

Head coach Sito Alonso was thrown out of the game with 4:34 remaining. It was a poor defensive effort overall creating frustration and angry complaints to the referees that led to the ejection. Murcia did not give up and reduced the deficit to five points but eventually went from dropping 1-2 in Spain’s Liga Endesa last weekend to 1-1 in the four-team group of the BCL.
