The latest development after Gianni Petrucci, president of the Italian Basketball Federation, revealed Segafredo Virtus Bologna’s intention to leave the Basketball Champions League and join 7DAYS EuroCup include a 250.000 fine, per Italian outlet Spicchi d’Arancia. The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) of Lausanne is expected to eventually determine the outcome of a possible dispute.

As a result, FIP announced its considering withdrawing Bologna from the cities proposed to host some games of the upcoming EuroBasket, set to take place between 17 and 29 of August, 2021. Additionally, the Italian Basketball Federation noted it already formalized Virtus’ registration for the 2019-20 BCL season and that the club’s decision has caused discomfort, since the fine is a result of withdrawing from the competition after registration.

In its precedent related announcement, Virtus denied signing any agreement with Basketball Champions League or 7DAYS EuroCup. The team also apologized for causing any discomfort and clarified it remains committed for the best possible result in favor of Italian basketball.
