Sergei Babkov, one of the most prominent Russian players of the 1990s, passed away at 56 per Sport Express. A shooting guard, Babkov spent most of his career in Spain with Unicaja Malaga.

Babkov won back-to-back silver medals in the 1994 and 1998 World Championships as a member of the Russian national team. In 1994, he was the leading scorer in the Final loss (91-137) against Team USA (Dream Team II).

At 21 and just in the second year of his professional career, Babkov became the scoring champion in the 1993-94 German League with TBB Trier. He then signed a contract with Malaga where he spent the next five seasons before moving to fellow Spanish side Joventut Badalona for 1999-00.

He overall averaged 16.4 points during his six-year run in the Spanish ACB League.

After playing one year for his hometown team Novosibrik, Babkov retired from basketball in 2001 and then began a coaching career with several Russian teams.
