Maccabi Tel Aviv star guard Lorenzo Brown said that he won’t join the Spanish national team in the upcoming 2023 FIBA World Cup in order to nurse an injury that has been troubling him since the 2022 EuroBasket.

Brown led Spain to the gold medal in the 2022 EuroBasket with 15.2 points and 7.6 assists. as the team’s naturalized player.

“I suffered an injury in last year’s gold medal run in the FIBA EuroBasket that was never given time to heal, having to immediately jump right into my 2022-23 EuroLeague season,” Brown said in a statement he posted in his social media. “I have met with three separate specialists who have told me that continued rest and treatment are the only way for me to return to 100% for this coming season.”

Brown added that he expects to rejoin Spain in the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris. “My hope is to have the honor of representing Spain in the 2024 Summer Olympics and after much thought and consultation, I believe this decision gives me the best opportunity to help our pursuit for gold next summer in Paris.”

Spain, the defending world champion, will begin this year’s tournament against Brazil, Iron and Ivory Coast in Group G in Jakarta, Indonesia.
