The 2027 FIBA World Cup Qualifiers for Africa, Americas, Asia, and Europe are set after the draw that took place Tuesday (13/5) in Doha, Qatar where the competition will be held.
Hall of Famer Carmelo Anthony was the leading conductor in the draw as FIBA Global Ambassador, while Dirk Nowitzki was also present bringing the Naismith trophy to the stage.
Carmelo Anthony was assisted by British icon Sir Mo Farah – one of the most decorated long-distance runners in history, with four Olympic gold medals and six world titles to his name – Mutaz Essa Barshim, the four-time Olympic medalist in the high jump, and Yassin Mousa, GGC basketball legend and 3×3 world champion.
FIBA President Sheikh Saud Ali Al Thani, FIBA Secretary General Andreas Zagklis, and the FIBA Central Board attended the event, along with Qatar Basketball Federation and LOC Director General Mohammed Al-Meghaiseeb. More than 60 representatives from National Federations around the globe were also present in Doha for this prestigious occasion.
The Qualifiers will be played from November 2025 through March 2027 and will include 420 games.
In the European Qualifiers, 32 teams will play during six windows for 12 open spots in the FIBA World Cup
In the First Round, the 32 teams will be divided into eight groups of four. Each team will face the other three in their group on a home-and-away basis over the first three windows, with two games per team played in each window.
The top three teams in each group will advance to the Second Round of the European Qualifiers, where they will join three teams from another group.
All teams will carry over the results from the First Round, ensuring every single game has meaning in the Road to Qatar 2027.
At the end of these additional six second-round games per team, the top three teams in each group will qualify for the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2027.
The qualification process follows the FIBA Competition System, which was successfully used for the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2019 and the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023.
