Launching the Qualifiers campaign in late November, the team coached by Spanoulis jumped to a 2–0 record in Group B. This placed Greece on a one-game lead over both Montenegro and Portugal, both 1–1, and a two-game cushion over winless Romania’s 0–2.
The top three Group B countries will advance to the Second Round, where they will merge with the top three from Group A to form Group I. In this new six-team group, teams carry over all results from the First Round and play six additional games against the three opponents they have not yet faced. Ultimately, the top three seeds from Group I will secure their tickets to the World Cup in Qatar.
