Janis Gailitis is the new coach of the Latvian national team, replacing Spaniard Sito Alonso.

The federation made the official announcement, as the former coach of VEF Riga and former assistant coach in the national team, gets to lead Latvia in the 2027 FIBA World Cup qualifiers.

Gailitis led Mitteldeutscher BC in the 2025 German Cup, and he is currently the head coach of SIG Strasbourg.

After the first four games for the qualifiers, Latvia has a 1-3 record in Group F, while Poland (4-0) has already qualified in the second phase, and the Netherlands is second in the standings with a 2-2 record.

Latvia is still expected to qualify, but the team was expecting better results.
