The Spanish Basketball Federation has taken a significant step in its long-term strategy by launching a specialized training camp in Madrid dedicated to monitoring the nation’s rising talents, as announced on Monday.
Under the expert guidance of the senior national team selector, Chus Mateo, the program focuses on a select group of twelve players who have largely transitioned out of youth international eligibility but remain high-potential candidates for the senior national team. This initiative specifically aims for athletes to develop their game abroad, particularly within the NCAA, ensuring they remain integrated into the national team’s technical framework.
The roster features several decorated prospects, including FIBA U19 World Cup 2023 champions Jordi Rodriguez of Charlotte and Victory Onuetu of Wisconsin, alongside former Iowa standout and future Louisville player, Alvaro Folgueiras. The group also includes seasoned youth internationals like Ruben Dominguez, currently at Louisville, and Michael Caicedo, who has been competing domestically.

By gathering these players between this Friday and next Wednesday, FEB wants to assess their physical and tactical progression firsthand. Mateo emphasized that the growth of Spanish talent in the United States is a permanent shift in the basketball landscape, necessitating a more adaptive and proactive approach to talent management.
Besides Caicedo, Dominguez, Folgueiras, Onuetu, and Rodriguez, other youngsters called up were Drexel’s Clemson Edomwonyin, DePaul’s Fabian Flores, Vermont’s Lucas Mari, High Point’s Conrad Martinez, UNC’s Eddy Valentino, LSU’s Pablo Tamba, and San Diego’s Jose Roberto Tanchyn.
