France’s generational phenom, Victor Wembanyama, has been officially named captain of the senior national team for the upcoming FIBA window.
After a busy summer featuring chess matches, rugby cameos, and hosting his San Antonio Spurs teammates in Paris, the 22-year-old center has fully pivoted his focus back to Les Bleus. He recently joined the squad in Orleans to prepare for the next games in the FIBA World Cup 2027 Qualifiers.
Wemby expressed great pride in wearing the national jersey, noting that the responsibility feels heavier because international campaigns are brief and every single game carries immense weight.

Under the guidance of head coach Frederic Fauthoux, the new captain views this stretch as a vital opportunity to adapt to the coaching staff, integrate new teammates, and lay the long-term foundations for the World Cup and the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games.
The towering center will benefit from built-in chemistry as he reunites with fellow Olympic silver medalists Evan Fournier, Rudy Gobert, and Matthew Strazel for the first time since their historic Paris 2024 Olympic run.
To prepare for official matchups, France will contest two exhibition games against Nikola Jokic and a strong Serbian squad, first in Belgrade and then in Orleans. These matchups serve as the ultimate test before competition begins in Group L of the European Qualifiers.
The team coached by 53-year-old Fauthoux currently holds a dominant 5–1 record from the previous stage, a feat accomplished while Wembanyama was sidelined. Now leading the frontcourt, the star center will spearhead the roster for showdowns against Slovenia in Paris and Sweden in Stockholm.
Following international duties, the Le Chesnay native will return to the United States to shift his focus back to the Spurs for the NBA Preseason.
