Spain fell to Greece (108-105) in a game decided by the final minutes. The Spanish team was unhappy with the officiating, and Darío Brizuela spoke out after the game.
The Barça guard criticized the referees in comments reported by Diario MARCA:
“We knew where we were, and the officiating was blatantly bad. This is FIBA, and they have to look into it. The refereeing crew that comes here has to have the professionalism required to officiate a game at the OAKA. Then you would ask them about the calls, and they didn’t even know what to answer,” the Spanish guard said.
“You can clearly see on the video scoreboard that Aday Mara doesn’t touch his face, but his shoulder. Yet they review it and call an unsportsmanlike foul. Then, on another much clearer play that should have been an unsportsmanlike foul, they don’t review it (Dorsey’s foul on Parra), because if they had reviewed it, they would have had to call it an unsportsmanlike. It sucks, but that’s the context in which the game is played, and it’s neither our fault nor Greece’s. FIBA is the one that has to look into it,” he said after the game.
“I have to say that they didn’t let us sign the scoresheet, and I’d like to know exactly why. They told us we were late, but how much time do we have after a game ends if the referees just run off?” he said regarding the officiating.
Brizuela also took the opportunity to address Spain’s poor form and their three consecutive defeats in the FIBA windows.
“It’s obvious that we haven’t had the results we wanted this summer. We haven’t been good in this Window or the previous one, and that’s bad because we weren’t just winning before, we were also playing very well. Chus’ plan was perfectly clear, and obviously the responsibility for these defeats lies with those of us who have been here,” he concluded.
