Spain – Poland and Argentina – Serbia are the first two quarterfinal matchups of the 2019 FIBA World Cup, following the results of Day 9 of the competition.
Spain defeated Serbia to clinch top spot in Group J. Sergio Scariolo’s players controlled most aspects of the game following the first period to force their opponents into their first defeat in the tournament.
“They kicked our ass,” Serbia star guard Bogdan Bogdanovic admitted after the match. His teammates, center Nikola Jokic, was ejected halfway through the third period. Coach Sasha Djordjevic wasn’t exactly happy about it.
Argentina continued its undefeated run by downing Poland 91 – 65 and winning first place in Group I.
Meanwhile, in the Classification Round, Nigeria and Iran grabbed an Olympic berth after beating China and Philippines respectively. The latter will have to play in the Olympic Qualifiers.
