Aris claimed victory in the matchup that closed Round 17 of the Greek League, winning 102–95. The game went to overtime after the teams were tied at 87 at the end of regulation, and was marked by the ejection of Ergin Ataman.
Elijah Mitrou-Long, with 24 points, and Amine Noua, who added 19 points and 10 rebounds, were the standout performers for the home team.
Juancho Hernangómez and TJ Shorts scored 16 points apiece to lead Panathinaikos, but their strong performances were not enough to prevent a clear overtime defeat.
Despite holding comfortable leads in the second quarter, Panathinaikos saw the game go into halftime tied at 42.
After the break, the home side’s momentum grew, and Aris built a lead of up to 14 points in the final quarter (80–66).
But when it seemed everything was decided, the visitors mounted a comeback and, despite (or perhaps thanks to) Ataman’s ejection, managed to force the game into overtime.
The five minutes of extra time were dominated by the home team, as Aris gave Panathinaikos no chance.
After his team’s defeat, Dimitris Giannakopoulos went off on his Instagram account.
Panathinaikos owner D. Giannakopoulos ANGRY😳
“Head coaches, assistant coaches, you have no idea where you’re playing, eh? This is Panathinaikos.
I hope that when you come back to Athens, if you have the decency to come back, you’ll all resign.
And all the players together” pic.twitter.com/oC4gOW48eJ
