The investigation into the Greek basketball scandal is still pending; however, the board elected a new president since Vaggelis Liolios is out of the picture, and tomorrow they will meet with Greek sports minister Giannis Vroutsis.
Aggelos Papanikolaou was elected as the new president from the 23-member board in an extraordinary meeting.
Papanikolaou was an opponent of Liolios in the 2021 elections for the presidency; in the recent 2025 elections, he was on Liolios’ side, running for a spot on the federation board.
The intention of the sports ministry, however, seems to be for the whole board to resign and for a personality with wide acceptance in the basketball world, like Panagiotis Giannakis, to take over.
Former player Periklis Dorkofikis, who played for Olympiacos and AEK in the past, was added to the board today as a runner-up from the previous elections.
He was running with presidential candidate Panagiotis Fasoulis, who lost twice to Liolios in 2021 and 2025, and he already made a public statement on his social media asking for the board to resign and get a fresh start.
