Former Panathinaikos Aktor head coach Ergin Ataman expressed his deep shock regarding the major corruption scandal currently shaking Greece.

Speaking during a visit to Athens, where the investigation has led to the pre-trial detention of prominent officials, including the former president of the Hellenic Basketball Federation, Vangelis Liolios, the Turkish tactician shared his perspective on the unfolding events and his enduring connection to the Greens.

“Hello. I am in Athens and following by shock all the news, but I’m sorry that it would not be appropriate for me to express an opinion on a matter that is currently before the judiciary,” he reflected regarding the ongoing proceedings during a text exchange with the Greek television network ANT1.

“Panathinaikos is a very big club and will take whatever steps are necessary regarding this issue,” continued Ataman, turning his attention to his former club, expressing full confidence in the organization’s leadership moving forward. “I like to send all Panathinaikos and real sports lovers my love and greetings.”

The Istanbul native also explicitly highlighted his appreciation for club owner Dimitris Giannakopoulos, “I love Dimitris and his passion for Panathinaikos and Greek sports,” he added.

Ataman’s deep ties to the Greek powerhouse stem from a successful multi-year tenure that concluded in June. Under his guidance, Panathinaikos returned to the absolute pinnacle of Europe, capturing the EuroLeague championship in 2024 alongside domestic League and Cup trophies.

Currently serving as the head coach of the Turkish senior national team, the 60-year-old expert remains heavily invested in the continental community.
