Roberts Stelmahers is the new head coach of the Latvian national team, the country’s basketball federation announced on Thursday. The final decision on the national team’s next head coach was taken during the scheduled board meeting of the LBS and afterwards shared on social media.

Latvia was eliminated from the 2019 FIBA World Cup, but has already set its sights on the 2021 EuroBasket Qualifiers. In Group H with Greece, Bulgaria and Bosnia and Herzegovina, the Latvians need one of the top three positions to qualify.

Stelmahers, 44, former player, launched his coaching career back in 2009. He has since been crowned Latvian champion three times and led Ventspils to the Latvian-Estonian League title last season. Aside from Latvian clubs, the experienced coach has worked in Poland and Lithuania.
