Rajon Rondo will be out for six to eight weeks due to a fractured right thump, according to multiple reports. The 34-year-old point guard of the Los Angeles Lakers will undergo surgery. The initial timeline of his absence forces him to the sidelines through the eight additional regular season games and the first round of the playoffs.

Rondo played in 48 matches of the 2019-20 season prior to the decision to halt the action, in response to the coronavirus pandemic. He averaged 7.1 points, 5.0 assists, and 3.0 rebounds.

He picked up the right thump injury during Sunday’s practice, the second conducted by the Lakers upon the trip to Orlando, site of the tournament planned to resume and conclude the NBA season.

His team sitting first in the Western Conference thanks to a 49-14 record enters the tournament without Avery Bradley, who previously opted out of the NBA restart citing family reasons.
