The NBA updated its return-to-play protocol with an antibody test for players and staff who have recovered from the coronavirus COVID-19, according to a league memo obtained by ESPN.

Since dead coronavirus cells can be detected in testing, a false positive result can sideline a player for an extended period. The report notes that at least one player tested positive after recovering and went on with multiple negative test results.

The return-to-play protocol includes a total of 14 days from the first positive test or the last symptoms. In addition, a player must produce two negative tests through 24 hours, a positive antibody test within the last 30 days, and a negative rapid test before getting cleared.

The 2019-20 season is planned to resume on July 30 in Orlando with 22 teams playing eight additional regular season games. The top eight teams from each conference will advance to the playoffs.
