The NBA and the NBPA have reached an agreement for the suspension of random marijuana testing for the 2020-2021 season, per Marc Stein of the New York Times.

“Due to the unusual circumstances in conjunction with the pandemic, we have agreed with the NBPA to suspend random testing for marijuana for the 2020-21 season and focus our random testing program on performance-enhancing products and drugs of abuse,” said NBA spokesperson Mike Bass in a statement.

In an inteview with GQ, NBPA executive director Michelle Roberts said she believes it’s all but certain that when the next CBA (Collective Bargaining Agreement) will be negotiated, random marijuana testing in the NBA will be over permanently.

“We’re not going to expose our players to unnecessary risks,” Roberts said. “And it is not necessary to know whether our players are positive for marijuana.”
