Sergio Scariolo seems ready to return to Europe once more and leave the Toronto Raptors behind him. The Italian coach talked to the local Spanish radio station “Cope Malaga” and, among other things, also talked about his view when it comes to European coaches in the NBA.

“You add things, an experience, you grow, you try new emotions. It is clear to me that the NBA is not at all prepared to bet on a European coach as head coach. It seems that the European coach or the European manager or sports director has a ceiling. There is a lot of respect and consideration, but there is a point from which it is as if it was not our thing. You have to accept it or stop accepting it, but fighting with it does not make much sense,” Scariolo said, per SUR.

Scariolo has been an assistant with the Toronto Raptors since 2018 under coach Nick Nurse and has even gotten a chance to lead the team when the latter was unavailable due to the COVID protocols. He coached the Raptors to a win over the Houston Rockets in late February.

The Spanish national team expert will have a busy summer due to the Olympics but also when it comes to his future in club basketball. Scariolo has been expected to continue with the Raptors, however, he has been on the radar of European teams including Virtus Bologna which parted ways with Aleksandar Djordjevic.
