Philadelphia 76ers head coach Doc Rivers will remain in his position in the 2022-23 season, club Daryl Morey confirmed today to reporters.

“Yes,” Morey answered when he was asked if Rivers will be returning to coach the Sixers in the upcoming season. Philadelphia was eliminated in the Eastern Conference semifinals by the Miami Heat after losing 90 – 99 in Game 6.

Rivers had previously said that he’s not worried about whether he’ll keep his post or not. “I think I do a terrific job and if you don’t then you should write it,” the 2008 champion said. “I work my butt off to get this team here,” Rivers said. “When I first got here, no one picked us to be anywhere. And again this year, the same thing. If that’s how anyone feels, write it.”

“Every time you’re wrong, should you lose your job? No. So, it’s the same thing. If you believe that, then go with it. I know what I did this year and I feel very good about that.”

For one more season, the Sixers began with championship aspirations but didn’t even manage to make the Finals of the Eastern Conference. Expectations were particularly high after James Harden was acquired in February in a trade that sent Ben Simmons to the Brooklyn Nets.

“It’s tough to be here right now,” Morey said. “Still emotional. Doc met with the team in the locker room and that will stay there,” Morey said. “It was an emotional locker room. Look, we’re excited about what we can build from here. We think of a lot of things that we can approve on. That’s on myself, that’s on Elton [Brand], that’s on coach Rivers. We’re going to figure this out.”
