After teasing basketball fans all over the world with a video published on his social media accounts in which he said “And now what?”, Marc Gasol officially announced his retirement from basketball today in Barcelona, where he started his successful 20-season career in 2003.

Playing there until 2006, he moved to Basquet Girona, winning the 2008 ACB MVP Award. He returned there in 2021 after officially acquiring the red-and-white club, playing while being the president and bringing the Catalan side back to the ACB.

Most importantly, he followed his brother’s steps in the NBA, being selected with the 48th pick in the 2007 NBA Draft by the Los Angeles Lakers. Immediately moved to Memphis, he stayed there from 2008 to 2019, and the Grizzlies are now expected to retire his number 33 jersey, according to Shams Charania.

The Spanish center also won the NBA Championship with the Toronto Raptors in 2019 alongside his national team’s head coach Sergio Scariolo, with whom he lifted in the air two World Cups (2006 and 2019) and two EuroBasket (2009 and 2011).

He also got silver medals in the 2008 Olympic Games in Bejing, in the 2012 Olympic Games in London, and in the 2007 FIBA EuroBasket. Marc Gasol captured bronze medals at EuroBasket 2013 and 2017. The experienced center ended his NBA career with the Lakers in 2021.
