The Miami Heat have expressed interest in Sergio Scariolo as associate coach.

Such a potential return to the NBA would list him working under head coach Erik Spoelstra.

The news was revealed by Alex Molina of Eurohoops Spain on Monday, following up on a recent report on the 64-year-old Italian tactician traveling to the United States to interview with an NBA franchise.

Scariolo, 64, previously served as an assistant coach of the Toronto Raptors under Nick Nurse from 2018 to 2021. His run was highlighted by winning an NBA championship in 2019. He left the lone Canadian franchise of the league to sign a multiyear contract with Virtus Segafredo Bologna and become the new head coach of the Italian club.

In a second stint since 2015, he is the current selector of the senior national team of Spain. Successful spells have translated into gold medals in the FIBA World Cup 2019, and the 2009, 2011, 2015, and 2022 editions of EuroBasket, silver in the Olympic Games 2012, and bronze in the Olympic Games 2016 and EuroBasket 2017.

Further coaching experience stretches from being in charge of Virtus Bologna in the 2022-23 season of the Turkish Airlines EuroLeague to earlier stints in Europe’s premier club continental competition with Laboral Kutxa, EA7 Milano, Khimki, Unicaja Malaga, Real Madrid, Tau Ceramica, Teamsystem Bologna, and Scavolini Pesaro. A long career since the 80s featuring a 7DAYS EuroCup championship in 2022 with Virtus Bologna, alongside several domestic titles in Italy, Spain, and Russia.
