Before Victor Wembanyama entered the NBA, even after he was selected with the first overall pick in the 2023 draft, many were skeptical, rejecting early projections that he would dominate the league. Even his international teammate, Guerschon Yabusele, initially had his doubts, but quickly changed his approach.
“The only thing that I was worried about was that he was really skinny,” he shared his first impression of Wemby in a visit to The Roommates Show.
“So, I was like, ‘I know he is going to put up some muscle’. I was like, ‘When he is going to come to the league, he is going to change his body, he’s not going to stay like this. ’ I knew this was coming, but I was like, ‘OK, he’s really, really skinny. ’ But what impressed me was the skills,” added Yabusele.
“Who does that? You’re just too tall to be doing stuff like that,” he continued, rewinding to his first experience of watching him dribble and move on the court. “When he changed his body and went to the league, I saw his transformation. I was like, ‘OK, Wemby is the next one, for sure.”
The 29-year-old forward also talked about himself bouncing back in the NBA, his 2024-25 journey with the Philadelphia 76ers, signing with the New York Knicks as a free agent, his poster dunk on LeBron James en route to a silver medal in the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, and more.
