Golden State Warriors superstar guard Steph Curry will be entering his 17th season in the NBA and there may be several more to come.
In an interview with Complex’s “360 With Speedy,” Curry discussed how he’s nowhere near even considering retirement.
“I just want to be in a position where I can say I’ve done everything I can to get everything out of this game,” Curry said. “Hopefully, I have my health and the choice to say ‘I’m hanging it up and I’m good.’ But I’m nowhere close to that, though.”
Curry will be 38 years old next March. He debuted in the NBA in 2009 with the Warriors, spending his entire career in Oakland.
After winning everything there is to win not only in the NBA but also on international level with Team USA, Curry’s initial goal now is keeping himself motivated.
“I’m kind of taking it in two-year chunks,” Curry added. “Just to know, you have to give yourself something and some motivation to kind of go after it. I talked to all the guys who got into this situation where they’ve extended their prime, and there are more ungraceful endings than there are ‘I tip the cap’ type of thing.”
During the 2024 offseason, Curry was busy with Team USA as he, LeBron James, Kevin Durant and the rest of the squad won the gold medal in the Paris Olympics.
This summer is different though. Curry considers dealing with this lack of action, especially compared to the NBA season, as another way to assess how many playing years he has ahead of him.
“The offseason, for me, is the hardest because once you get into the 82 games, it’s repetition, you know what you need to do in practice in the off days,” Curry said. “You love playing, and the games are most fun… like, you get lost in the game, that’s the easy part. So if I can get through the offseasons, I feel like that’s a good marker for how long I can push it.”
