The Washington Wizards are shutting down newly acquired star Anthony Davis for the remainder of the 2025-26 NBA Regular Season.
The Wizards intend to allow the 32-year-old forward/center, who is dealing with lingering hand and groin injuries, to fully recover and be healthy for the start of the 2026–27 season.
Senior NBA insider Chris Haynes revealed the team’s plan on Friday.

Washington acquired the ten-time All-Star from the Dallas Mavericks in a significant nine-player, three-team deal at the league’s trade deadline on Thursday. In the transaction, the Wizards received Davis, Jaden Hardy, D’Angelo Russell, and Dante Exum. Dallas got Khris Middleton, Marvin Bagley III, AJ Johnson, Malaki Branham, and draft compensation, including future first-round picks.
The Chicago native has been sidelined since early January with ligament damage in his left hand. Despite an initial six-week recovery estimate, the Wizards, currently out of playoff contention with a 14–36 record and seeking to maximize their position in this summer’s draft, opted for a cautious approach.
In 20 appearances with the Mavs this season, Davis averaged 20.4 points, 11.1 rebounds, 2.8 assists, 1.7 blocks, and 1.1 steals per contest.
It remains unclear whether the former top draft pick is aligned with the team’s long-term project, as he may remain away from championship contention next season. His contract runs through 2027–28 and includes a player option for the final year.
Trae Young, who has been out with a right knee MCL sprain and right quadriceps contusion since joining the Wizards in early January, finds himself in a similar situation to Davis. However, Young is expected to be re-evaluated after the All-Star break.
