The NBA can perhaps evaluate a transition to a 40-minute game format to align with FIBA rules, increase broadcast ratings, reduce player fatigue, and integrate with the league’s burgeoning NBA Europe project

The debate over the NBA’s 48-minute game structure has intensified following a series of posts on X by billionaire entrepreneur and former Dallas Mavericks majority owner Mark Cuban.

Cuban argued that transitioning to 40-minute games, matching the standard used in college basketball, the WNBA, and international FIBA play, could be the key to modernizing the league for a digital-first audience. By reducing the regulation time by eight minutes, the league would effectively decrease the physical load on players by an amount equivalent to roughly fourteen games per season, all without the logistical headache of breaking existing arena leases or shortening the 82-game calendar.

Beyond player longevity, the proposal centers on the evolving habits of sports consumers. Cuban noted on social media that shorter bursts of live action actually drive higher broadcast ratings, as evidenced by the massive success of the NFL, which features significantly less actual gameplay than basketball. Shorter games would likely increase the sense of urgency from the opening tip. He believes this shift could also disrupt the trend of tanking by narrowing the window for talent gaps to manifest, theoretically making every possession more impactful and allowing underdogs a better chance at an upset.

However, such a radical shift faces steep opposition rooted in the NBA’s statistical legacy. Transitioning to 40 minutes would create a permanent era gap, making it nearly impossible for future stars to challenge cumulative career records or single-game milestones established during the 48-minute era. Furthermore, there are valid concerns regarding the middle class of the NBA with smaller rotations that could lead to fewer roster spots and reduced minutes for role players.

With commissioner Adam Silver actively exploring the creation of a 16-team European league in partnership with FIBA, a central pillar of this NBA Europe project is the adoption of the 40-minute game format to align with the existing European standard and respect local sporting models.
