Giannis Antetokounmpo navigates a career-defining crossroads in Milwaukee as he balances franchise loyalty against the urgent pursuit of an NBA championship

The future of Giannis Antetokounmpo in Milwaukee remains the NBA’s most pressing storyline as the franchise enters a pivotal 2026 offseason. Despite the Bucks electing to retain their star through the February trade deadline, the two-time MVP’s long-term status is far from settled after an injury-plagued 13th season where he was limited to just 36 appearances.

Speaking to Toni Canyameras of Mundo Deportivo, his brother Alex Antetokounmpo, currently on a two-way contract, addressed the uncertainty surrounding the Bucks legend’s next move.

“I don’t know. I hope. We all love him here in Milwaukee, we all want him to stay here in Milwaukee. So whatever he decides. I’m his family, but when I mean his family, his kids and wife decide, it’s going to be what’s best for them,” the 24-year-old forward noted.

Suiting up for the Wisconsin Herd, Alex has averaged 4.9 points and 2.8 rebounds in the G League this season, while Giannis has continued to produce elite numbers when healthy, averaging 27.6 points and 9.8 rebounds per game with the Bucks in the 2025-26 NBA Regular Season.

Beyond playing, the Antetokounmpo brothers are increasingly linked to the business side of the sport, particularly as rumors swirl regarding a potential NBA Europe expansion. “For sure. If that opportunity ever comes I will definitely have to snag that,” Alex responded to a question about being open to invest in a franchise alongside his brothers. “Depending on whatever the opportunity comes, I will definitely take it.”

“They will have to keep wondering,” he added when asked about Greek fans wondering if it would be Olympiacos or Panathinaikos.

For now, the pressure on the front office is intensifying. Giannis is under contract through 2026–27, with a player option for the following year, but becomes eligible for a massive four-year, $275 million extension in October. Bucks co-owner Wes Edens has established an extend or trade mandate, stating that the team cannot afford to let him enter the final guaranteed year of his deal without a commitment. If he does not re-sign, the team may be forced to explore a trade.

While 31-year-old Greek superstar has publicly affirmed his commitment to Milwaukee, he has consistently maintained that his priority is playing for a championship-caliber team.

If the extension remains unsigned, potential suitors like the New York Knicks, Miami Heat, Houston Rockets, and Orlando Magic are expected to be waiting.
