Following the Golden State Warriors‘ elimination from the 2026 SoFi NBA Play-In Tournament, a landmark era in San Francisco stands on the precipice of its conclusion.

After a grueling 2025-26 Regular Season that left the Warriors in tenth place with a 37-45 record, their 2026 NBA Playoffs, presented by Google, aspirations vanished with a loss to the Phoenix Suns. While the organization shifts its focus toward offseason logistics, the focus remains centered on Steve Kerr. The 60-year-old play-caller finds himself at the end of his current contract, and according to team sources via ESPN, he has requested a period of contemplation before committing to his next chapter.

After twelve seasons and four NBA championships, the winningest coach in franchise history is weighing a potential return to the sidelines against a move back into sports media or total retirement.

Kerr’s departure would signal the end of a golden age for the franchise. Since 2014, he has gone from a legendary playing career, marked by five rings and an iconic game-winner with the Chicago Bulls, to a historic coaching tenure. His influence even expanded to the international stage, where he guided Team USA to a gold medal at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games.

As the front office awaits his decision, they must also navigate a shifting roster, particularly regarding their European core. Latvian veteran Kristaps Porzingis enters the summer as an unrestricted free agent after finishing his $60 million extension, while the Dutch duo of Quinten Post and Malevy Leons are both headed for restricted free agency.
