Victor Wembanyama believes acceptance is the key to handling the immense expectations that continue to surround him despite being only 22 years old and the leader of the San Antonio Spurs, that are trailing 0-2 in the NBA Finals against the New York Knicks.
Speaking about the pressure that comes with his rapid rise to stardom, the French phenom said he has learned to embrace both his journey and the opportunities that lie ahead rather than becoming overwhelmed by them.
“How to deal with it? I think the key is acceptance,” Wembanyama said. “A lot of times, and taking a step back, realizing the journey that’s behind us, and what’s ahead of us, and just being okay with who I am, where I am, what I’m doing. This is everything that I wish for so there’s no reason to really overthink it.”
The 22-year-old added that the spotlight and expectations are challenges he feels prepared to face.
“I mean, this is what I’m built for,” he said.
Wembanyama’s mature outlook has become one of the defining characteristics of his young career, helping him navigate the intense attention that follows him on and off the court.
The French star was also asked whether the presence of U.S. President Donald Trump at the event could make it more difficult for players to maintain their focus.
Wembanyama dismissed the idea, explaining that he has spent years developing the ability to block out distractions and concentrate on the task at hand.
“Not really. I think it could be. Isolating myself is something I’ve practiced over the years and I think I’m good at it, so it’s not a problem,” he said.
