By demanding an unrealistic return package for 31-year-old Giannis Antetokounmpo, the Milwaukee Bucks are stalling league-wide trade talks and threatening to strip suitors of vital NBA championship assets

The trade saga surrounding Giannis Antetokounmpo has reached a critical standstill as the Milwaukee Bucks‘ initial deadline converges with the 2026 NBA Draft, presented by Google, which tips off its first of two draft days this coming Tuesday.

According to NBA insider Jake Fischer of The Stein Line, Bucks general manager Jon Horst has set an unrealistic asking price, demanding a return package so massive it would leave any acquiring franchise completely barren and unable to legitimately contend. This extreme leverage strategy has created a severe paradox for aggressive suitors, given that the Greek superstar’s primary motivation to commit to a long-term contract extension hinges entirely on a new team’s immediate ability to chase championships. Notably, Giannis has never actually ruled out staying with Milwaukee if the front office can guarantee contending status.

The resulting bottleneck has caused immense frustration across the league. The Boston Celtics seem to be growing increasingly annoyed by the sluggish process and premature speculation surrounding a potential star-for-star swap involving Jaylen Brown. Meanwhile, the Miami Heat remain hesitant to gut their young core, including Lithuanian Kasparas Jakucionis, and draft capital, especially since the Athens native turns 32 next season and managed a career-low 36 appearances last year due to persistent calf and knee injuries.

Amidst these shifting market dynamics, the Orlando Magic have emerged as an intriguing dark-horse candidate. When questioned about the team’s potential involvement in the sweepstakes, Magic president Jeff Weltman strictly avoided tampering violations while acknowledging the external buzz. “First of all, you know I’m not allowed to speak about that,” he told the Orlando Sentinel. “I just think that, to me, I take it as a compliment that we have a lot of players that the league is interested in and that we could even be thrown into that conversation speaks to the talent on this roster.”
