Nikola Vucevic is back where his legacy began, inking a one-year minimum contract to complete a reunion with the Orlando Magic this summer.
The veteran center spent nine spectacular years of his career in Orlando before being traded away in 2021, and his decision to return home as a free agent was driven by both professional and personal motivations.
“It was a mix of things,” he told HoopsHype via text message. “Obviously, the time I spent there. The team is good, and with the hiring of coach Sweeney, they want to win now. It worked great for my family, which was also very important for me.”
His return to Florida marks a stark contrast to his sudden departure five years ago when Orlando shipped him to the Chicago Bulls. Following that move, he continued to showcase his skill set in the Eastern Conference. As Vucevic turns 36 in October, he proved he can still be a highly productive player, but was traded once more, this time splitting the 2025–26 campaign with a stint on the Boston Celtics.
Now a veteran of 1,058 contests, including 22 appearances in the Playoffs, the Montenegrin big has often been linked to a return to Europe to conclude his journey, but nothing concrete has ever materialized. Instead, his focus remains entirely on the NBA, especially since deciding to retire from international play and being recently honored by the Basketball Federation of Montenegro, KSCG.
When asked if this upcoming 2026–27 stint would also be his last NBA run, Vucevic replied with a smiley face emoji, “No, not yet,” explicitly stating that he does not intend to call it a day anytime soon.
