Luka Doncic paid tribute to legendary NBA coach Don Nelson, who died Sunday at the age of 86.
Nelson coached the Dallas Mavericks from 1997 to 2005, while his son Donnie served as the franchise’s general manager when Dallas acquired Doncic in a 2018 draft-night trade.
“It’s a sad day for basketball with the passing of Don Nelson.
I have so much respect for him and everything he did for the game, especially the way he believed in international players. I’m grateful for the time I spent with him.
“Thinking of the entire Nelson family today. I loved getting to know you, Coach,” Doncic wrote on X.
Nelson remained a vocal supporter of the Slovenian star. After receiving the Chuck Daly Lifetime Achievement Award, he wore a pair of Doncic’s Nike sneakers and described the Mavericks’ decision to trade him to the Los Angeles Lakers as a “tremendous mistake.”
