Chris Paul could eventually become involved with the Los Angeles Lakers following the franchise’s reported sale to Josh Kushner and former Disney CEO Bob Iger.
Speaking on ESPN’s NBA Today, Ramona Shelburne identified Paul as a name to monitor because of his close relationship with Iger.
“Chris Paul is a very close friend of Bob Iger’s. He’s been a mentor to Chris,” Shelburne said. “I don’t know what that means for him, but I expect they’ll be talking.”
Paul retired in February after 21 NBA seasons. Although a return to the court is not expected, his experience and basketball knowledge could make him a candidate for a position within the Lakers organization. At this stage, however, neither Paul nor the prospective owners have announced any talks or defined role.
The possibility would carry added significance after Paul’s proposed trade to the Lakers was controversially blocked by the NBA in 2011. He subsequently joined the Los Angeles Clippers, where he spent six seasons.
Kushner and Iger have reportedly agreed to purchase the Lakers from Mark Walter for more than $12 billion. If completed at that price, the transaction would establish a new record for the sale of a professional sports franchise.
