The NBA has imposed sweeping penalties on the Los Angeles Clippers following a yearlong investigation into alleged salary-cap circumvention involving star forward Kawhi Leonard and “The Klaw” was punished with a heavy fine of 700,000, but not with expulsion from the NBA.
So there is no longer any reason for the agreement between the Clippers and the Raptors regarding the return of the 35-year-old forward to Toronto not to be completed.
As Shams Charania of ESPN indicates, in the coming days the trade will go through and thus Kawhi will return to the team with which he won his second NBA championship (2019), after the one with the Spurs in 2014, in both of which he was named Finals MVP.
Because the Clippers lost five future draft picks due to their punishment, the Los Angeles organization may now ask for more picks than the two that were originally agreed among the trade assets.
The initial agreement stated that Kawhi would move to Toronto and that Brandon Ingram and Gradey Dick, along with two first-round draft picks, would go the other way.
The Raptors logically will have no objection to adding some future picks in order to complete the deal and once again make their own the man who led them to the only title in their history.
