The Minnesota Timberwolves are heading into training camp with a clear focus on the court, even as questions about Rudy Gobert’s long-term future linger.
The French center is officially eligible for a new contract extension. However, insider Jon Krawczynski reported on his eponymous show on Thursday that there is no immediate momentum toward a deal. Both sides seem open to looking at options, though nothing is imminent.
The 34-year-old big has a guaranteed contract through the upcoming 2026–27 season. His current deal includes a player option worth 38 million dollars for the following 2027–28 season. During the last negotiations in 2024, he accepted a lower annual salary to give management the financial breathing room needed to build a winning roster. If a new multi-year agreement happens, it will likely follow that same blueprint, per Krawczynski.
Securing the defensive mainstay remains a priority given his celebrated pedigree. Over his decorated career, the dominant rim protector has earned four Defensive Player of the Year awards, matching the all-time NBA record. His shot-blocking and rebounding completely transformed Minnesota’s identity upon his arrival from the Utah Jazz in 2022, turning them into a legitimate championship contender.
With the preseason media day coming up on Monday, the squad is shifting its attention to the Regular Season. The Timberwolves have scheduled six preseason games, leading to their official opener on October 21. They will travel to the Kaseya Center to face the Miami Heat, who now feature Greek superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo.
