According to Woj’s tweet: “The Charlotte Hornets have received permission to interview San Antonio Spurs assistant Ettore Messina for head coach opening, league sources tell ESPN. GM Mitch Kupchak and Messina worked together with Lakers when Messina was part of Mike Brown’s coaching staff”.

Kupchak was recently hired as the new general manager of the Hornets and Messina was a coaching consultant for the Lakers during the 2011-12 season, before returning to Europe and to CSKA Moscow for two years.

In 2016 he was also considered a candidate for the Lakers head coaching job and also the Grizzlies and the Rockets were interested in him. Born in 1959, Messina has won the EuroLeague with CSKA Moscow (2006, 2008) and Virtus Bologna (1998, 2001), he is considered one of the best coaches in the history of European basketball and since 2014 he is a member of the Spurs coaching staff.
