Luol Deng and the Los Angeles Lakers have reached a buyout agreement that will make the player a free agent, according to Chris Haynes of ESPN. The 33-year-old British/Sudanese forward had two years and 36.8M remaining in his contract with the Lakers.

By unloading Deng’s contract, the Lakers ensure having enough salary cap space next summer in order to potentially sign a player to a maximum contract deal, per ESPN’s Bobby Marks. There will be some interesting options for L.A. regarding pairing Lebron James with another superstar.

Deng, a 14-year-old NBA veteran, signed a lucrative four-year, $72 million contract in 2016 but played only 56 games in 2016-2017 and appeared in merely one match of the previous season.

UPDATE: The Lakers announced that they officially waived Luol Deng.
