Newly crowned NBA champion with the Toronto Raptors Marc Gasol can opt out of his contract with the Canadian team and explore his options as a free agent. The New Orleans Pelicans are reported to be among the teams interested in the Spanish big guy.
According to Fletcher Mackel, the Pelicans “have had conversations” about signing Gasol in free agency. Gasol will receive around 24 million if he opts in the final year of his contract but could face uncertainty when he becomes a free agent in 2020 at 35 years of age. Opting out and signing with another team may not earn him the same amount of money but it can provide more long-term security.
New Orleans is also an appealing case since the team features a young lineup with 2019 no. 1 Draft pick Zion Williamson, plus Lonzo Ball and Brandon Ingram who were acquired by the L.A. Lakers via the Anthony Davis trade.
