The exodus of projected talents from Europe to the NCAA continues

By Eurohoops team / info@eurohoops.net

While such a trajectory was embraced by some talents already in the past few years, with Egor Demin and Kasparas Jakucionis leaving Real Madrid and Barcelona in the summer of 2024, for example, this transfer window will always be remembered as the one featuring the exodus of European talents.

Attracted by the new NIL regulations introduced in the NCAA, a vast number of projected stars or high-level players in Europe are moving to the United States not only to dream of the NBA in the future, but also to already gain a significant amount of money.

The latest of such names is the 2007-born Spanish talent Guillermo Del Pino, who decided to join the Maryland Terrapins instead of going through the path all the way to first teams in Europe.

Product of Unicaja‘s youth system, just like Mario Saint-Supery, he last played in the Spanish third division with Cordoba, putting up 10.3 points per game at 18 years of age.

He was named MVP of the 2023 FIBA U16 European Championship, averaging 14.6 points with 45.5% from deep in leading Spain to the title. Moreover, last summer he had 11.0 points per game at the FIBA U17 Basketball World Cup in Turkiye.

“He’s a highly skilled and competitive player who has proven he can produce at a high level. Beyond his talent, Guillermo brings outstanding character, maturity, and a deep love for the game of basketball. We’re confident he’ll make an immediate impact and will be a key piece of what we’re building here at Maryland,” head coach Buzz Williams said.
