French forward Oscar Wembanyama has officially launched his professional career, signing his first pro contract with Denain ASC Voltaire for the 2026–27 season. The northern French club announced the high-profile addition on Thursday, marking a pivotal step for the rising talent.

Widely recognized as the younger brother of San Antonio Spurs superstar Victor Wembanyama, 19-year-old Oscar is deliberately carving out his own independent path by entering Elite 2, France’s highly competitive second-tier division. This strategic move aims to secure the regular playing time necessary to solidify his trajectory toward the next NBA draft.

The transition follows a successful developmental stint with SIG Strasbourg, whose senior team is heading into the upcoming Basketball Champions League campaign. While Wembanyama dominated France’s U21 league, averaging 10.5 points, 5.4 rebounds, and 2.5 assists per contest, first-team minutes remained sparse in the top-flight Betclic Elite. Stepping into Pro B grants him immediate exposure to the grueling demands of senior basketball, maximizing his court time and accelerating his athletic maturity.

Remarkably, Wembanyama only switched to basketball in 2021 at age 14, having previously dedicated his youth to handball. His relatively late start has been rapidly erased by an exceptional work ethic and exponential developmental growth over the last 18 months. Standing 2.02 meters tall with a commanding wingspan, his unique two-way versatility was recently on full display at the prestigious adidas Eurocamp showcase.

Operating under an intense global spotlight and inevitable family comparisons, the modern forward relies heavily on a supportive inner circle to maintain sharp focus. By securing a major senior role in Denain, the all-around wing has a platform to refine his perimeter game and fulfill his immense potential.
