Bursaspor has officially appointed former FC Barcelona boss Roger Grimau as its new head coach, securing the 47-year-old tactician on a deal through the end of the 2025-26 season, the team announced on Thursday.
Grimau, a 1.96m former swingman who captained Barca to a EuroLeague title in 2010, brings elite-level experience to a Bursa side currently embroiled in a tense battle to avoid relegation from the Turkiye Sigorta Basketbol Super Ligi. Since transitioning to coaching in 2015, the Barcelona native has climbed the ranks from youth development to the EuroLeague stage, most recently serving a stint with Romanian representative Dinamo Bucharest following his departure from the Barcelona senior team in 2024.
The coaching change comes during a turbulent campaign for the Green Crocodiles. The club began the year under Nenad Markovic, successfully navigating the Basketball Champions League Season X, powered by Ameresco SUNEL, qualification rounds before a winless 0-6 group stage exit in December led to a mid-season shift. Ahmet Caki took the reins in November but struggled to find consistency in domestic play. Currently sitting at a 6-17 record in the 2025-26 BSL Regular Season, Bursaspor remains just two games clear of the relegation zone, where Karsiyaka and Onvo Buyukcekmece currently trail at 4-19 and 3-20, respectively.

The club believes Grimau’s leadership and tactical pedigree will provide the necessary spark to secure their top-flight status. The new head coach is scheduled to arrive in Bursa this Saturday and will observe Sunday’s Round 24 clash against powerhouse Fenerbahce Beko at the Tofas Arena from the sidelines. His formal coaching debut is expected to take place in Round 25, when Bursaspor travels to Istanbul to face Galatasaray MCT Technic at the Turkcell Basketball Development Center.
