A 38 PIR debut signals big things for the Bulgarian side

By Stefan Acevski/ info@eurohoops.net

Javante McCoy’s BKT EuroCup debut for Balkan Botevgrad didn’t end in a win, but it left no doubt about what he can do: 32 points on 13-for-17 shooting from two-point range, 4 rebounds, 2 assists, and a PIR of 38, the highest of any player in the competition’s first round.

The only thing missing was the win, as Balkan fell 98-84 on the road to ratiopharm ulm.

However, while the team might not remember its debut in this competition fondly, McCoy, the team’s newest addition, certainly will.

He joined the club after a brief stint at Elitzur Ironi Netanya, which was also his first European engagement. In his EuroCup debut with Balkan, McCoy added 1 for 3 from three and 3 for 4 from the free-throw line, drew 7 fouls, and committed only 2 turnovers, though the result kept him out of contention for the MVP award.

Journey from Boston University to Balkan

McCoy enrolled at Boston University in 2017, where he spent five years and was remembered as one of the best players in the history of the university. This 28-year-old guard played 147 games for Boston over five seasons, averaging 13.1 points. He was at his best in his final season, averaging 17.4 points, 3.9 rebounds, and 2.9 assists. Nevertheless, this did not secure him a spot in the NBA Draft.

Several years in the G League followed, where McCoy played for the South Bay Lakers, Austin Spurs, Motor City Cruise, and Grand Rapids Gold. He was also briefly a member of the San Antonio Spurs, who signed him but then released him two days later.

At the beginning of 2025, McCoy suffered a severe knee injury that sidelined him for the rest of that season. He spent the following year working his way back before signing with Balkan for its first-ever BKT EuroCup campaign, a decision that already looks like the right one.

Leader of Balkan

In the very first game, McCoy showed that he is capable of being the leader of this team and the project developing in Botevgrad.

McCoy has only once scored more than 32 points: 35, in Netanya’s jersey. Under the guidance of head coach Bogdan Karaicic, he will have all the freedom he wants, which suits the American well. Javante doesn’t rely heavily on three-point shooting, but he excels in drives, finishing around the rim with both hands, hitting floaters, and various types of layups, which should be his advantage in Europe.

He also doesn’t turn the ball over too much, and he can organize the game and set up points for others, exactly the kind of two-way value Balkan will need Wednesday at home against Bahcesehir College Istanbul, in what’s shaping up as an early test of whether McCoy really is the leader this project has been waiting for.
