Zenit St. Petersburg shut off Khimki Moscow in the second half and won the VTB League derby of the week.

Zenit St. Petersburg took a major advantage in the battle for the second place of the regular season in VTB League after beating Khimki Moscow 74 – 66 on the road.

This result gets them to a 19-3 record and kept Khimki third at 17-5, while CSKA Moscow still leads the standings at 20-2.

Sergey Karasev (23 points, 5 rebounds) and Stefan Markovic (18 points, 6 assists, 6 rebounds) ran things exceptionally in their team’s offense but it was defense that made the difference for the winning squad.

After trailing 42 – 39 at halftime, Zenit surged for a 2 – 17 partial score that gave them a double-digit lead 44 – 56. Khimki cut it down to 3 quickly but the momentum had been shifted towards their opponents’ side who remained ahead for the remainder of the match.
